Senior Care Group Home or Big Assisted Living Facility?

When the time comes to begin researching facilities for your elderly loved one to stay in it can be a bit challenging to discern which choices are the best ones. Of the many options out there the most highly regarded choices are senior care group homes or assisted living facilities. Deciding which of these is best for your family member will take some research and understanding of the two, as well as a comprehension of what it is your loved one is looking for.

What is a Senior Care Group Home?

A senior care group home is typically a regular home found in your local neighborhood. Sometimes run by nurses and other medical personnel, they provide non-medical care for the elderly. Because of the size of these facilities, they generally service between two and ten patients at a time. Many seniors love this idea because it offers a “home” like feel. Like assisted living facilities, it is a live in facility for which the elderly stay all day. These facility types are best for those that do not suffer from serious medical conditions that result in a need for feeding tubes or injections.

Generally seniors receive:
* A room
* Three meals per day
* Assistance with daily activities such as getting dressed, healthcare, using the restroom, getting washed, and even handling finances.
* Housekeeping, transportation to appointments, and laundry
* Medication administration

Downside to Senior Care Group Homes

While these home-like small intimate setting might seem beneficial to all seniors that is not the case. For those who would like to remain active, a senior care group home might not be the best place. Larger facilities have more activities such as dance and on site aerobics that cannot be offered in a senior care group home. It is also not ideal for the elderly who are dealing with serious medical conditions that need lots of intravenous medications, feedings, or monitoring.

While the costs of senior care group homes can be significantly less than assisted living facilities, there are some that do not accept insurance claims. This would mean it becomes an out of pocket expense of anywhere from $1500 to $5000 per month.

Big Assisted Living Facilities

Unlike the small “home” like senior care groups assisted living facilities are large buildings or communities of buildings that can hold anywhere from two to as many as 100 seniors at one time. The facilities are staffed with certified medical professionals to provide long term care for seniors dealing with just about any medical condition. They have the means to not only provide medical care, but they have a large enough facility to offer other services to seniors including exercise, and other extracurricular activities.

Downside to Assisted Living Facilities

There are some realities about assisted living facilities that you might consider before making your decision. They are understaffed and thus could lead to negligent care, patients are not always guaranteed a private room, and visitation is limited, not to mention they are double the price of a senior care group home.

Choosing the best option will really come down to the satisfaction of your loved ones as well as their personal needs. Take a tour of both choices and see which works best for you.
